Becoming a flight attendant requires a series of intensive training in personality development and emergency response. The minimum education requirement for a job in this field is a high school diploma but some major flight carriers today prefer those who are college degree holders.
Any college majors are accepted but you can have a greater competitive edge when you finish courses such as communication, public relations, sociology and psychology. Aside from education prerequisites, applicants are required to undergo training and certifications to develop their skills in customer service.
Normally, trainings run from three to six months and it is a combination of lectures and practical examinations to test the applicant’s in-flight readiness. One of the basic certifications that an aspiring flight attendant must complete is the Course provided by the Airlines industry. This module discusses the primary roles and responsibilities of a commercial attendant. The trainer also explains the importance and techniques of grooming as well as proper etiquette when dealing with passengers.
Here, the candidate is exposed to the relevance of being culture-sensitive in rendering excellent customer service experience. Most certifications of this kind come with a fee especially when it is administered by a tourism agency. On the other hand, major airlines like Air France-KLM provide stipends for its successful trainees but the screening process is tough and the slots are limited.
When the applicant successfully passes the basic training, s/he is endorsed to prospect airlines for selection. From there, the aspirant can be a part of either the cabin or ground crew. The requirements for hiring ground crews are less strict than that of the cabin crew; however, the salary and benefits are more conservative. Schooling also available for ground crews but it is not immediately required by the sponsoring airline company.
On the other hand, being chosen to become a part of the cabin team means more opportunities for development trainings. These include language and speech practice, emergency response course, first aid training, and personality development (grooming). The company may also require successful trainees to undergo survival course. This covers survival swimming, CPR, and flight safety.
Because of the huge demand for attendant, airline companies are sub-contracting flight agencies to conduct the training courses. These organizations are certified by aviation security authorities of governing countries and are well-knowledgeable of standard operating procedures of different airlines. Most applicants are buying the services of these agencies because slots are readily available that comes with a cost.
Education is just the first stepping-stone towards becoming a successful flight attendant. After which, candidates are subject to medical examination to ensure that no major illnesses can prohibit a person from performing well at work. Contagious disease such as hepatitis and sexually transmitted disease automatically disqualifies an applicant.
